July 8, 2019 - July 12, 2019

The International Phosphorus Workshop (IPW9) will take place on July 8-12 in ETH Zurich, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics University in the city of Zurich (Switzerland).

The IPW’s arose from the understanding that eutrophication of waters is related to phosphorus management on land, including rural and urban areas, and that combating any phosphorus related problems requires the proper understanding of biogeochemical mechanisms and processes underlying the terrestrial-aquatic phosphorus continuum. Because the inefficient and unsustainable use of phosphorus in our societies is intimately linked to the dissipation of phosphorus into the environment, the IPW’s are also conferences on sustainable phosphorus use, including reuse of societal waste phosphorus, and efficient phosphorus use in crop and livestock production.

The aims of IPW 2019 are to gather experts from natural, engineering and social sciences in order to:

  1. Discuss concepts, which drive research and use of phosphorus in our societies.
  2. Review the progress in knowledge and technology related to phosphorus.
  3. Define questions for future research and action to solve phosphorus related problems.

These objectives will be addressed in five themes, each from an interdisciplinary perspective, including natural, engineering, socio-economic and political sciences. Novel results and methodologies shall be presented as well as science-to-application case studies. The main themes are:

  • Phosphorus scarcity
  • Optimizing regional and national phosphorus cycles.
  • Sourcing phosphorus fertilizers.
  • Efficient phosphorus use in agroecosystems.
  • Environmental phosphorus problems.
