The WASTEred project, co-funded by European Commission through the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation (EACI), proposed by means of LODOred an environmentally friendly, sustainable, innovative and cost effective solution for the surplus sludge reduction in the meat and dairy industries.
WASTEred: WASTE REDUCTION IN THE EUROPEAN MEAT AND DAIRY INDUSTRY
“WASTEred aimed to promote the market introduction of the eco-innovative product LODOred for the reduction of surplus sludge in the meat and dairy industry.
The WASTEred project comes up to launch the LODOred product into the European market as an ECO-Innovative solution to reduce the waste generated during the wastewater treatment in the meat and dairy industries, since these sectors are two of the highest sludge generators within the food industry and the sludge management accounts for 50% of the operating costs and for 65 % of the environmental impact of waste treatment.
Moreover, the quantity of sludge generated in Europe is increasing substantially but environmental policies are becoming more stringent and fewer acceptable disposal routes are available, what enhances the LODOred value.
LODOred was applied in full scale case studies in Poland, Germany and Spain. For that, the consortium elaborated a questionnaire which was sent to more than 400 end-users to choose the most suitable ones; moreover a protocol for monitoring the plant parameters within the studies was developed. Once the sites were selected, LODOred was used during 9 months. In addition, several promotion activities targeted to multipliers and potential clients and an effective market strategy was developed within the project.
– Waste reducing in the targeted food industry sectors.
– Improving water quality of receiving water bodies (lakes and rivers) through better treatment performance in the WWTPs.
– Reducing the “ecological footprint” of the complete wastewater treatment process in the food industry.
– Facilitating access of SMEs to innovative “green” knowledge, increasing awareness and promoting networking,
– Reducing disposal costs for sewage sludge (35%).
– Reducing costs for polymers for sludge dewatering (50%)
– Reducing energy costs (25 % energy reduction).
– Reducing pollution fees 20% (pollution charge for quality of effluents).
1. Reduction of waste (surplus sludge) generated in the wastewater treatment plants::
– An average reduction of 30% achieved.
– Reduction of CO emitted in the transport of sludge by 3750 km.
– A total amount of 21,375 km saved, meaning 17,100 kg less of CO2 emitted.
– Improvement of the air quality due to incineration of sewage sludge by 1500 tons. 7,284 tons has been reduced during the project avoiding emitting 1000 tons per year of CO2 if the sludge is incinerated.
– An average of 30% of energy costs reduced in the case studies where LODOred was implemented.
2. Reduction of polymer consumption of 25% achieved. Estimations made, provided a total amount of chemical saved of 22 tons in a year.
3. Increase treatment efficiency and reduce pollution of effluents by 21% as average in terms of COD, BOD and NH4.
4. Dissemination and training activities through specific capacity building program and related materials such as: explanatory flyers and posters, product and project presentation, user guide of the product and product promotion video. All this information is available in English, Spanish, German, French and Polish. The product promotion video is available in English, Spanish and German and has been subtitled in Polish and French.
