ENGAGING PEOPLE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FOOD PACKAGING CULTURE IN EUROPE

Sustainable food packaging

Public engagement

Tools, strategies and activities

InformPack explored cross-cultural differences among consumers regarding awareness, knowledge gaps, concerns and attitudes towards food packaging—how it affects product choice, and disposal patterns at home and on the go. The project aimed to support the transition toward a more sustainable European food packaging ecosystem by influencing public behaviour and engaging citizens in identifying solutions.

The project showed that public engagement alone is not enough to address all the challenges, as consumer behaviour is closely linked to systemic and market-driven packaging solutions. For this reason, InformPack also collaborated with industry actors to co-create packaging concepts that reflect both consumer expectations and the operational needs of the food packaging value chain

BIOAZUL led the public engagement activities in Spain, coordinating workshops and co-creation sessions with schools, families and social organizations. Among other actions, BIOAZUL:

  • Organized 10+ co-creation and training workshops, including family recycling sessions where parents and children participated together.
  • Designed and disseminated communication materials and infographics tailored to different audiences.
  • Collected feedback and insights from citizens to inform the development of packaging alternatives.

OBJECTIVES

  • Over 600 citizens in Spain and Poland participated in co-creation activities and educational workshops.
  • Stronger collaboration was fostered among stakeholders across the packaging value chain in Europe to find shared solutions to systemic challenges.
  • Citizens in the target countries became more actively engaged as changemakers in the food system.
