On June 20th, the workshop “Innovative Solutions and Non-Conventional Resources in the Axarquía” will take place in Vélez-Málaga, organized by BIOAZUL and the University of Córdoba, in collaboration with TROPS and with the support of the European Union and the PRIMA Foundation, as part of the European project BONEX.
BONEX is a European project that promotes integrated management of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus in Mediterranean regions affected by climate change, through innovative and participatory solutions aimed at enhancing the sustainability of water use in agriculture.
In the Axarquía region, the project has implemented a demonstration pilot based on the use of reclaimed water for fertigation, along with the development of a decision-support tool that enables proper nutrient balance by taking into account the composition of reclaimed water. Given the high nutrient content of this water, such solutions help improve the efficiency of both water and fertilizer use in crops such as avocado, mango, pitaya, and passion fruit.
This will be the fourth and final workshop held in the region as part of the BONEX project. It will take place on Friday, June 20th, from 10:00 to 13:30, at the TROPS event hall in Vélez-Málaga. The objective of the event is to present the project’s main results in the region and to discuss challenges and opportunities in the use of non-conventional water resources, such as reclaimed and desalinated water.
Topics to be presented include:
The workshop will conclude with a roundtable discussion featuring key regional stakeholders — including irrigation communities, water operators, public authorities, and sector experts — to address the main challenges and opportunities from multiple perspectives.
