Creation of different Research Groups

The PAVITR project provided real solutions for water-related challenges in the Indian context. The core of PAVITR was an interdisciplinary group of universities, research centers, SMEs and non-governmental entities. The project identified and formed knowledge networks between Europe and India, specialized in technology transfer.

The main objective of this project was to validate, develop and implement efficient and sustainable solutions that faced water challenges and thereby guaranteed the reuse of water, ensured the quality of river water and restored degraded ecosystems in India. This was achieved through the implementation of wastewater treatment technologies and the use of sensors for emerging and traditional contaminants.

At PAVITR, different research groups were formed, each focused on the evaluation and improvement of a specific aspect of the entire system:

  • Water and Rainwater Research Group (WRW-RC)
  • Wastewater treatment research group (WWT-RC)
  • Strategy and Decision Making Research Group (SDM-RC)
  • High Resolution Management Research Group (HRM-RC)
  • Business Studies Research Group (BS-RC)

The project successfully developed and validated 16 innovative, adaptable, and efficient wastewater treatment systems. These systems benefited over 50,000 people by providing cost-effective solutions for water challenges in India. PAVITR’s achievements included the production of marketable secondary raw materials, implementation of safe water reuse schemes, and the reduction of adverse effects from organic load discharges into the environment.

“An incentive has been received from the Agency for Innovation and Development of Andalusia IDEA, of the Andalusian Government, for an amount of 9,000 euros, 80% co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund, ERDF for the realization of the project Innovation and affordable solutions for water treatment and purification in India (702N1700023) with the aim of “Promoting technological development, innovation and quality research.”

Results obtained

  • Innovative Solutions: Developed and validated 16 efficient wastewater treatment systems, benefiting over 50,000 people in India.
  • Environmental Impact: Reduced organic load discharges and restored degraded aquatic ecosystems in targeted areas.
  • Water Reuse and Resource Recovery: Implemented safe water reuse schemes and produced marketable secondary raw materials from wastewater.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Established strong Europe-India knowledge networks and successfully adapted European water technologies to the Indian context.
  • Capacity Building: Enhanced local expertise through training programs in sustainable water management and new treatment systems.
  • Policy Influence: Impacted water management policies at local and regional levels, providing evidence-based recommendations for sustainable practices.
  • Economic Benefits: Created new business opportunities in the water treatment sector and reduced water-related costs for communities and industries.
