STAFF EXCHANGE OF SUWANU PROJECT

Reading time: < 1

Between the 19th and 22nd of May, the partners from SuWaNu project joined one of the most interesting activities of this initiative, travelling across different places in Andalusia. The main goal of this journey was showing organizations from other countries about relevant experiences on wastewater reuse in our region. Thanks to the interactive programme prepared by the Spanish cluster, our partners from Germany (TTZ-Bremerhaven), Greece (University of Thessaloniki and PASEGES), and Malta (University of Malta) could see and verify by themselves how Andalusia is a pioneering region in terms of wastewater reuse, and how the use of treated wastewater in agriculture is a sustainable alternative for many irrigation communities facing water shortages and water quality problems every year. According to data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute, 87.74 Hm3 of wastewater was reused in Andalusia in 2012, which corresponds to 16% of the total wastewater reuse in Spain.

All the staff exchange activities were organized by FERAGUA, in collaboration with BIOAZUL, IFAPA and AGAPA, and gathered representative personalities from universities, research centres and agricultural co-operatives from Greece, Malta, Germany and Spain. Out of all activities carried out, it is worth mentioning the visit to Añoreta Golf Course (Rincón de la Victoria, Malaga) and the wastewater treatment plant in the same municipality; the experiences shared with the irrigation communities of Cuatro Vegas (Almeria) and Tintín (Cordoba); and last, but not the least, the visit to two prestigious research centres: IFAPA (Almeria) and CENTA (Seville).

The idea behind this programme is to facilitate the uptake and successful implementation of such practices across not just the participating regions, but also in the rest of Europe.
