On October 6th, the Spanish partners of the European project P2GreeN met at the experimental plot of the Spanish pilot, located in Algarrobo (Málaga), to present, together with a group of key local stakeholders, the new smart fertigation tool developed within the framework of this project.
After three years of work, P2GreeN is entering its final year of implementation, with the main goal of testing and adapting the use of urban wastewater and organic solid waste to produce safe bio-based fertilizers for agriculture.
In the case of the Spanish demonstrator, the main objective is the development and implementation of an innovative decision-support and nutrient-control tool, based on the application of reclaimed water for the fertigation of avocado and mango crops. This tool allows precise adjustment of irrigation and fertilization according to the water and nutrient needs of the crops at any given time.
Within the framework of the Spanish pilot in La Axarquía:
BIOAZUL is responsible for the treatment and regeneration of municipal wastewater from the Algarrobo WWTP, providing a nutrient-rich effluent suitable for fertigation use.
TROPS, a leading cooperative in the tropical fruit sector, applies the reclaimed water to avocado and mango crops, conducts agronomic monitoring, and performs a comparative study with other conventional water sources.
Agualytics has developed the smart fertigation tool, which enables real-time monitoring of nutrients in reclaimed water and optimizes fertilizer application according to crop needs.
Cetaqua Andalucía plays a key role in collecting, monitoring, and validating the data generated throughout the pilot during the project.
AXARAGUA, the public company operating the Algarrobo WWTP, represents the public water management sector, contributing its expertise in decision-making and helping to identify the needs addressed by the project.
A 360º virtual tour will soon be available, allowing users to experience how the Spanish pilot operates in an immersive way. This digital experience will be part of a series of videos showcasing the different pilots of the P2GreeN project, helping to illustrate the innovative solutions developed in each country.
During the event, Agualytics officially presented the smart fertigation tool, which combines monitoring and data analysis technologies to provide precise recommendations on fertilizer input and improve the efficiency of reclaimed water use.
Attendees were able to see firsthand the equipment, sensors, and components installed in the experimental plot to monitor soil moisture and the nutrients present in reclaimed water—enabling automated fertigation control.
In November 2025, the P2GreeN project will begin its final year of implementation, running until December 2026. This final phase will focus mainly on evaluating the results obtained in the pilots, transferring the developed solutions to other European regions, and strengthening governance models that promote more sustainable and circular agriculture.
