Business for nature: a global coalition to reverse nature loss

Reading time: 2

Bioazul has recently joined Business for Nature, a global coalition that brings together influential organizations and forward-thinking businesses to reverse nature loss and restore the planet’s vital natural systems.

The community is inclusive and composed of diverse and powerful group of organizations and networks working with businesses to reverse the loss of nature and forward-thinking businesses that have relevant commitments and that are acting to reduce their environmental impacts.

Business for Nature is amplifying a business movement for nature by convening a united business voice to influence key political decisions on nature in 2020 and beyond; demonstrating business ambition and action to protect and enhance nature by aggregating, amplifying and helping scale existing business commitment platforms; showcasing business solutions that are already translating commitments into action and meaningful impact, and driving business decisions and communicating the business case for reversing nature loss in order to galvanize a change in our global economy to incorporate nature protection.

This initiative has engaged over 200 companies from 15 sectors in five continents as well as many other organizations to develop five policy recommendations on nature.   Coupled with continued business action, these policies – once adopted – have the potential to unleash new opportunities and encourage business to do more, which in turn leads to more ambitious policies.

Business for Nature calls on governments to adopt the following five policy recommendations to accelerate business action by aligning policy frameworks and transforming economic and financial systems.

  1. Adopt targets to reverse nature loss: Provide direction and ambition.
  2. Align, integrate and enforce policies for nature, people and climate: Ensure coherence
  3. Value and embed nature in decision making and disclosure: Go beyond short-term profit and GDP.
  4. Reform subsidies and incentive mechanisms: Finance a just transformation.
  5. Join forces for nature and empower everyone to act: Engage, enable and collaborate.

World leaders have a unique opportunity in 2020 to forge an international agreement to reverse nature loss like the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. They can bring an aggregated business voice to the negotiations, calling on governments to adopt a new deal for nature and people that would provide the policy signals that are necessary to scale up business action.
