SUWANU EUROPE: Reuse of reclaimed water in agriculture

NETWORK FOR EFFECTIVE KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER ON SAFE AND ECONOMIC WASTEWATER REUSE IN AGRICULTURE IN EUROPE

Reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture

Effective exchange of knowledge and experience

Creation of Regional Working Groups

The SUWANU EUROPE was a Thematic Network, co-funded by the European Commission under its Horizon 2020, focused on the use of reclaimed water in agriculture. The reason behind was that wastewater when treated according to appropriate standards and methods has a strong potential to complement conventional water resources used in agricultural irrigation.

The aim of the project was to promote the effective exchange of knowledge, experience and skills between practitioners and relevant actors of water reuse in agriculture, so that direct applicable technological and organizational solutions are widely and balanced disseminated all around Europe resulting in a more resilient agricultural sector to cope with water scarcity and climate change effects.

The project created Regional Working Groups between consortium members and relevant actors in 8 target regions to establish permanent links with relevant local actors, encouraging flow of information among researchers, private innovators, civil organizations and public administration. The eight relevant regions selected to promote the adoption of water reuse strategies were: Andalusia (Spain), Braunschweig (Germany), Thessaloniki (Greece), Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Alentejo (Portugal), Po River Basin (Italy), Antwerp and Limburg (Belgium) and Occitan (France).

RESULTS OBTAINED

  • 30 Factsheets divided in 6 Info-packages oriented to satisfy the knowledge needs of the different target groups of actors and available in the 8 regional languages (Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian, English, Dutch, German, Greek and Bulgarian).
  • Lessons learned from successful water reuse in Cyprus and Israel. About these topics: water demand and supply; Wastewater treatment & reuse; Infraestructure; Quality Control; Agriculture code of practice; Pricing; Stakeholder involvement and Public acceptance
  • An SUWANU EUROPE E-learning Platform. The first online free course about reclaimed water which aims to transfer the knowledge obtained targets to provide key concepts and tools to understand the potential and limitations of water reclamation in Europe. Available in the 8 regional languages (Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian, English, Dutch, German, Greek and Bulgarian).
    • Database on reclaim water with more than 56 European initiatives related to water reuse in agriculture.
    • 100 practice abstracts submitted in the EIP-AGRI database
    • Policy Briefs on wastewater governance, public perception, risk management and wastewater finance.
    • 16 regional workshops: 16 training and participatory workshops with more than 644 people reached within the 8 target regions of SUWANU EUROPE.
    • An international conference: Live-streaming conference for all the world with 21 speakers with international relevance. 24 abstracts and posters were submitted to the scientific call. The conference engaged more than 400 participants.
