World Environment Day puts the focus on biodiversity

Reading time: 2

Today, June 5, is celebrated the World Environment Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 in the first world summit on the environment: the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, with the aim of raising environmental awareness and promote global action to protect the environment.

We are facing major climatic, health and social challenges, which have highlighted the importance of conserving Biodiversity to maintain life on Earth. Biodiversity is all the variability of living organisms of any kind, as well as terrestrial and marine ecosystems and other aquatic systems, and the ecological complexes of which they are part. It also encompasses diversity within each species, between species, and of ecosystems. It is all this complexity that allows our life on Earth, thanks to the ecosystem services it generates, providing clean air and water, nutritious foods, scientific understanding and medicine sources, natural disease resistance, and climate change mitigation.

For this reason, we need to have a more respectful and regenerative relationship with nature, put an end to negative impacts on ecosystems and take advantage of available technologies and knowledge to redirect our development model to a more sustainable one.

At Bioazul we contribute to sustainable business development and have been a signatory entity of the United Nations Global Compact since September 2019. The United Nations Global Compact is an appeal to companies and organizations to align their strategies and operations with Ten Principles on human rights, labor standards, the environment and the fight against corruption. Also, it has the UN mandate to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the private sector. Its mission is to generate an international movement of sustainable companies to create the world we want.

As part of our commitment to the United Nations Global Compact, we will annually publish a Sustainability Report to communicate our progress. Some of the areas in which we work in our projects at Bioazul in relation to the environment are:

  • Improve the efficiency of the use of resources such as in the case of water, through the treatment and reuse of water, and the use of the nutrients that are in that water in agriculture (RichWater, SUWANU EUROPE and FIT4REUSE).
  • Work on the reduction of food waste, by using technologies such as ultrasonic humidifiers that help preserve food in the supply chain longer (FRESH-DEMO).
  • Implementation Circular Economy projects, in order to reduce the need for raw materials, by encouraging system loops for the resources to remain in the economy for a longer time (Water2REturn, U-ECO)
  • Promotion of Nature-Based Solutions to make cities more sustainable and with greater biodiversity (Connecting Nature).
